Name: Laura Crespo
Title of Project: A Qualitative Examination of Parental Socialization Behaviors and their relation to Children’s Management of Sadness
Advisor: Janice Zeman
Honors Department: Psychology
Children’s ability to understand and manage emotions is influenced by the reactions of their parents when expressing them (a process called socialization). For my project, I will observe parent-child interactions and note specific nonverbal behaviors that contribute to socialization, with a particular focus on sadness.
The Honors Fellowship will be used to compensate participants, fund the equipment and software needed for data analysis, and provide support and resources during the summer while I carry out my project.
Hometown: Woodbridge, VA
Future Plans: After graduating William and Mary, I plan on pursuing a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. I intend to become a clinician and researcher with a focus in child psychology.
Campus Activities: Along with being a research assistant in the Emotion Socialization Lab, I’m a peer adviser and a member of Psi Chi.
Hobbies: I love cooking, reading, and watching every T.V. show available on Netflix. Also coffee. Coffee is good.
Fun Fact: I can speak German and I can solve a Rubix Cube. I’ve never done both at the same time, but I imagine it would be possible.
