Title of Project: Anatomy of Ashes: Fiction and Non-fiction Inspired by Fukushima
Advisor: Chelsey Johnson
Honors Department: English
My project will be an anthology of stories, both fiction and non-fiction, that will attempt to address issues raised by the disaster in Japan on March 11th, 2011, which resulted in the loss of billions of dollars of damage and thousands of lives. I also hope to examine my own role as a cultural outsider, as well as the difficulties in making this disaster relevant for an English-speaking audience.
Hometown: San Antonio, TX
Future Plans: After college, I hope to teach ESL in Japan, and then later earn an MFA in Creative Writing; my eventual goal is to write for television, although any profession that involved creative writing would be a dream for me.
Hobbies: Swimming, Netflix, writing of any kind, reading of any kind, imagining myself being interviewed by Oprah.
Fun Fact: I have an odd bucket list, full of fairly trivial goals; e.g., I want to be able to go to a restaurant so often that I’ll be able to say “I’ll have the usual” and the waiter or waitress will know exactly what I’m referring to.
