Name: Will Smith
Title of Project: The Impact of Solar Lights on Artisanal Fishermen in Monrovia, Liberia
Advisor: Philip Roessler
Honors Department: Government
For my honors thesis, I will conduct a randomized control trial (RCT) to analyze the impact of solar light technology on the productivity of artisanal fishermen in Monrovia, Liberia. If the study finds that these solar lights do indeed increase fishing productivity, it would indicate that these lights are tools for community development not only in the communities within the study field, but also in surrounding communities with similar characteristics.
Hometown: Avon, CT
Majors: Government & French
Future Plans: I intend to apply for various scholarships that would support my pursuit of a graduate degree in international development. After receiving a graduate degree, I hope to return to developing areas like Monrovia and aid in the rebuilding process firsthand.
Hobbies: I play the guitar and sing in the band ‘Last Call.’ We perform around campus and occasionally at small off-campus sites.
