Monarch butterflies appear to preferentially repurpose certain poisons from the milkweed they eat. The energetic cost of this discrimination process is significant to their ecology and to their conservation across their range.

Fun Fact: My grandmother’s great-great-uncle was Alessandro Volta, inventor of the battery and face of the 10,000 Lire note (before the switch to the Euro)
